OMG 2 (2023)
A captivating tale with a powerful message!
"सत्य हमेशा नग्न है, उसे कहने में कोई शर्म नही होनी चाहिए!"
Okay, let me be honest. I am in love with the first part of OMG, but I had my doubts about the second one when I watched the trailer and got to know the plot, because this is a sensitive topic and it can very easily become a bad execution especially when they have a religious deity involved. But I have to say, I am super impressed by the way they have handled it all, they are direct and yet careful about the representation. Akshay Kumar plays the 'Messenger of Lord Shiva' who has come to help a devotee in need, Kanti Sharan Mudgal. It was a powerful performance with some of the most impactful dialogues, and on top of it, a perfect appearance and look!
The film is about Kanti Sharan Mudgal, played wonderfully by Pankaj Tripathi, a religious man from a regular family whose life takes a turn when his son is caught in an act in school, and is rusticated for the same. Kanti takes it upon himself to defend his son, and files a case in the court. He raises an important question of why schools don't provide the necessary 'sex education' to children, which would avoid them learning such things from the wrong source, in the wrong way, carrying some extremely wrong beliefs.
How I wish this was a real case, how I wish schools were made compulsory to talk about such things openly, and provide the right guidance and knowledge to children and especially teenagers. We see the wrong-doings happening in the society, we see boys not respecting consent, we see teenagers insecure of their bodies because of a 'perfect' image created by movies & TV shows, we see the sexual abuse cases happening around everyday, we see all the bad things but we are not ready to talk about the solution. Hiding things from children clearly hasn't helped, infact it's making things worse. What's better is being honest with them and telling them what's right and wrong, explaining them the scientific reasons and physiological processes from a young age itself, breaking down to them this big jungle of sexuality that exists unanswered in their minds. Because only this will make them sane humans when they grow up, only then will they learn to look at all this with a neutral eye instead of a desparate one.
What I loved the most about this film is that they portrayed this subject without making it seem vulgar in any way, especially when they had the element of God involved. The character of Lord Shiva's messenger is truly a beautiful element that guides the path of Kanti throughout the film, infact he is the one who nudges Kanti to fight instead of running away from the situation, and keeps dropping hints to him whenever he is confused or lost.
"युद्ध है ये अभी...जो भागोगे तो गलत, लढोगे वही सही!"
Pankaj Tripathi as always is just flawless with his performance throughout, with the perfect innocence in his expressions and body language. He never fails to own the films he acts in.
Also a special mention goes to Yami Gautam (Kamini) for the sharpness with which she played her character,
and Aarush Varma (Vivek) for playing an intense character that made us feel his complexities through his effortless portrayal.
I don't want to give away too much but I will just say, this film is the need of the hour, it's one step in the right direction, and it has touched upon many different sub-branches related to its main point. Along with talking about how schools providing sex education is important, they also debated about the consequences of it, the good and the bad both. All the doubts that naturally arise in our minds regarding the implementation of this kind of education in schools, the film has the perfect answers for them! It makes the bottom line very clear - that it is necessary.
The dialogues written in the film are so so strong, some of them sound simple and yet carry a lot of weight. Pankaj Tripathi's lines especially are so well written & on-point, they leave no room for disagreement!
Overall I'd say, it's a must-watch! Seriously a must-watch for all the generations. No matter how uncomfortable you feel talking about such taboo subjects or listening to some conversations, this film is going to give a solid perspective to everyone watching it! And I hope one day, we get to see an improvement in the education system regarding the implementation of ALL kinds of education necessary for children, their mental maturity and their biological understanding!
Spoiler Warning - This next section of the blog will contain references to some important movie scenes :-
My top 3 favourite parts of the film :-
1. During the court trials, Kanti doesn't question the sex worker at first. Later that day, Akshay Kumar's character hints him by saying "Agar sawal nahi puchoge toh jawab kaise milega?" The next day Kanti takes the cross in the court and creates a powerful conversation, a strong discussion, that leaves everyone thinking and makes his side stronger.
2. When Kanti tells his daughter "Wahi kaho jo sabko sunne me accha lage" without giving her any background context of what he is saying, and even the daughter understands what he is trying to say without him being direct. The next day when she is questioned in court, she answers it with the help of scientific reasonings which makes it sound right / normal, and not vulgar in any sense.
3. The entire monologue of Kanti where he talks about how the 'Gurukul' system of learning or the ancient Indian education system was modern & open-minded, but the Britishers changed our education system and we have been following the same thing ever since. Further he says that even though technically we are an independent nation, we still follow the educational pattern that they imposed on us.
