The YJHD divide!
"Thak gaya hu...bhaagte bhaagte..
Maine wakt ki izzat nahi kee, aur papa chale gaye"
1. People say Bunny never loved Naina in the first half so what suddenly changed in the second half? Honestly, no offense but people who say this have not even seen the film I think. Ranbir Kapoor is someone who has extremely expressive eyes as an actor, and Bunny's eyes have been loving & different towards Naina right from the beginning of the film.
Even in the first half it was very clear that he has feelings for her, that he did infact fall for her, but at that point of time, his priority was his dream of traveling the world. And it's not a wrong thing to prioritise your dreams right? Think.
2. Another reason people hate him for, is the scene where he fights with Dev (Naina's friend) and says to her "mujhe lagta tha tum daru sirf mere sath peeti ho" because this depicts his possesive side towards Naina.
People have labelled Bunny as a toxic character for showing that side of him. Yes becoming insecure/ possesive was his flaw and behaving that way was wrong on his part, and not only this, he might have many other flaws in him just like normal people have. But does that become his entire identity? Do those few flaws take away all the good parts of Bunny? Be honest to yourself and think about it, have you never been possesive of a loved one before? Have you never messed up just because you were annoyed at the moment and were not thinking right? And if not, good for you. But you definitely might have some other imperfections if not these. So does your entire personality get defined by those fewer faults in you?
I agree there are some films which glorify wrong behaviour, you can just sense it while watching those films that "okay they are showing this toxic behaviour as cute". (*cough* Kabir Singh *cough*)
But I don't think YJHD ever glorified possesiveness, it flatly presented to us a story of four friends and their dynamics, of friendship and of love. Yes the four characters had different sides to them, but the wrong traits were never portrayed as heroic or beautiful, holistically it was depicted merely as a story, without preaching or conveying anything wrong. I feel when it comes to films, it's the director's responsibility to take care that a wrong gesture is not presented as heroic even if it's done by the lead character, and especially then. But I feel 'Ayan Mukerji' definitely took good care in presenting it well in this film. This scene along with some other scenes in the film just showed that no matter how cool Bunny is around everyone else, he does have a vulnerable side to him too, that comes out when he's with Naina.
3. And finally, the third main thing people troll this movie for is the ending. People often mock this movie by saying "how did he suddenly change his mind when it was his lifelong dream, and it's so unrealistic" but no! I don't think people understand how important the flashback scene is in the movie, when Bunny recollects the memory of his dad after he has passed away.
He comes back home and realizes how he was always into his own world and he unknowingly took the time with his dad for granted... and now he regrets it, but is helpless, he can't change things or spend more time with his father no matter how much he wishes for it to happen now...
As a character, it was very natural for him to come back to Naina at that point because he doesn't want to make the same mistake again, he doesn't wish to disrespect time and lose more people by not caring or being an "Awaara" like he was. He wants to love people when there's still time and wants to be with them and never have regrets that he didn't wait. So yaa, I don't think it was unrealistic infact I think this turn in the movie was extremely humane and realistic. It just shows how it's never too late to change your goals or decisions, because dreams do change, priorities do change, and they should be allowed to be changed!
Considering all these things, I really feel YJHD gets hate for the wrong reasons. It's a film that captures friendship, romance, adventure, family, and probably everything that we wish to enjoy a lifetime! There is some sense of magic in this movie that makes it so appealing, be it the relatable characters, the soulful performances, the superhit songs & dances, the storyline & screenplay, everything was beautifully conveyed! Plus, this film gives me immense comfort because it makes me feel okay about change of plans in life, change of dreams & priorities, about making mistakes, being foolish at times or messing up, but still getting my own version of happy ending! ❤️
Ofcourse everyone is entitled to have their own opinions and choices about movies, but before spreading hate for something, we should think twice about whether we are simply following the herd and trolling a movie for the sake of it? Are we thinking neutrally and moreover, are these our own opinions or just a new trendy opinion that we're forcing on ourselves? Think about it! Byeee!
Thankyou for reading :)
