Goodbye (2022)
"गायत्री जी इस्स धरती पर पहले भी बहुत बार आचुकी हैं" ❤️
The film 'Goodbye' is like a conversation between two generations, one that keeps customs and rituals above everything else, and the second one that tries to find logic and reasoning in every single thing. Both of these are two extreme poles, and the film is successful in bringing both the generations to a midpoint, where they both can co-exist.
You know all those parts of a death or a funeral that bring you discomfort, all those parts you avoid talking about because it's too direct and we are not ready for those kind of conversations, this film shows you all those uncomfortable parts without any filter, and you have no choice but to accept that - "this is how it ends".
There are many things in this movie that I would like to point out specially. One of them being, how they portrayed a character like 'Karan' who was the least emotional for his mother dying, who didn't shed much of a tear but in the scene towards the end when he calls for his mom by mistake, and that's when it really hits him that she is no more, that life is never going to be the same again, and he keeps calling for her repeatedly to process the entire thing. That is when he feels it all and cries. I think this was a great portrayal of how, sometimes someone's death will take time to register because they were just so precious. Often you don't realize what you've lost until you are in a situation where you need to handle things differently because of their loss.
One major aspect of this film was the Pandit Ji's character, which was so beautifully played by Sunil Grover, no one else could have done it better. His presence in the movie was pleasant right from his first shot. And a special mention to all the conversations between him and Tara.. the subtlety with which he tries to tell her that she is not wrong, but it's a matter of different perspectives. Once again it was proved through his character that, the simplest lines leave a deep impact.
"Jo baat samjhe nahi wo jaruri nahi ki galat ho"
In my opinion, this line is so important to keep in mind in today's time, when the older generation is unable to understand the younger ones and their ways of living, whereas the young generation is unable to accept the older people's reasonings. Both the generations need to understand that something might be right for you, but that doesn't mean it should be right for everyone else too. The best way is to let people live like they want to, let everyone have their own voices and opinions and live peacefully. As the dialogue says 'Just because you don't understand something, that doesn't make it wrong.'
The fact that by the end of the film, Tara learns to respect certain customs because it is explained in a better way, says a lot. If someone's forced to follow something, it's natural that they would resent it. But if they are talked to in a manner that they would understand, or if they are given the liberty of having their own thoughts, they can reconsider the situation and understand the other side better. This was another important portrayal.
The whole conversation between Tara and Pandit Ji, regarding science and spirituality with the example of a "dhun" (melody) was so interesting.
I honestly want to mention all of Sunil Grover's dialogues here but then it won't be fair, I am just saving them for whoever hasn't watched this film because watching Sunil Grover deliver those lines so effortlessly and beautifully on screen is worth waiting for!
The songs, be it 'Beautiful' making us go through the sweet rosy memories of the family, or be it 'Maaye' that is a heartache for the loss of a mother, be it 'Chann Pardesi' that gives us all the feels of a void because of missing someone, or be it 'Kanni' which takes us through a cute & old school tale of Harish and Gayatri.
But the one song that will always stay with me is 'Jaikaal Mahakal'... This song gives me chills everytime I listen to it, it has strength, it has purity, it has some lines that would leave you speechless and it's a composition that leaves you in a state of awe because it's just so amazing! Amit Trivedi never disappoints!
In the scene where they are all flying a kite and this song is playing in the background, and when they finally lose the last end of the string, the line plays "Jo tera tha wo jaakar tujhme samaya".. couldn't help but notice! ❤️
Like I said, overall this film was a wake up call for different generations, it was a much needed storyline and a genuinely good effort to make us gain a point of concurrence! I have watched this film long back, but there are some films which are SO good that you can't think of any words for them. But today I thought of writing about it because even if one person decides to watch this film because of whatever I write, I would want to take the chance! This film is worth all the love! And there are so many more deep and thought provoking lines throughout the film which I restricted myself from revealing. 😭
Please watch this movie, preferably with family.
